Honuaiākea Voyaging Program

college to career pathways

strengthening the next generation of environmental stewardship

The Honuaiakea Voyaging Program will immerse at-risk high school students from  Hawaii Island in an eight-week experience that will strengthen their academics, STEM research skills, and personal health and wellness as they transition into their college to career pathways. During the Honuaiakea program experience, students will learn how to conduct marine sustainability and stewardship research using an integrated methodology that blends institutional and indigenous sciences.

Opportunities:

  • open ocean readiness training - training Hawaiʻi Island youth in open ocean safety and rescue

  • college to career pathways - preparing the next generation of environmental stewards

  • climate change - community resilience; evoking lifestyle changes within communities to mitigate/prepare for the effects of climate change

Collectively, the Honuaiākea Voyaging Program will prepare students for the different life voyages they will embark on after graduating high school and transitioning into adulthood.

Nā Waʻa Mauō

monthly community workdays

When: Every Second Sunday of the Month

Location: Hilo One (Hilo Bay Front) on Hawaiʻi Island

Time: 9am to 12pm.

The monthly community workdays engage participants in culturally rooted marine sustainability and stewardship efforts using outrigger canoes and Native Hawaiian practices.

Participants learn how to:

  • use the Nā Waʻa Mauō methods to steward our oceans

  • examine Native Hawaiian resources

  • conduct community-driven marine stewardship efforts

Ke Kai Momona (the fruitful ocean) is the theme for the 2021 Nā Waʻa Mauō Community Workdays. During the community workdays, we will learn the value of marine stewardship and how that feeds the health, wellness, and longevity of Hawaiʻi peoples, communities, and natural resources.

Nā Waʻa Mauō Weekend Workshops

The NWM weekend workshop experience introduces participants to elements of our monthly marine stewardship community workshops and annual Honuaiākea voyaging program.

Participants will learn how to conduct marine monitoring methods using nā waʻa kaukahi, how to care for one another while voyaging and working in the open ocean, and how to develop their relationship with place and practice.

Through this overnight experience we hope to ignite an interest in our participants to strengthen their marine stewardship, share these practices with others, and engage in more sustainable lifestyles.
